“Excited” for Caitlin Clark to Shatter the NCAA Career Scoring Record, Kelsey Plum.
Record breaking is intentional, as Kelsey Plum understands. After an outstanding four years with the Huskies, the Las Vegas Aces and former Washington standout now holds the NCAA Division I women’s basketball career scoring record with 3,527 points. That record is in peril because, coming into Saturday night’s game between the No. 3 Hawkeyes and Maryland, Caitlin Clark of Iowa, the nation’s top scorer with 32.1 points per game, is only a short distance behind at second on the all-time list with 3,424 career points.
A video chat from a Team USA women’s basketball camp at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn included Plum answering questions about Clark and the record. According to Michael Voepel of ESPN, the polite Aces player expressed her gratitude to Clark for winning the record and expressed her excitement for the Iowa star. To be honest, I’m grateful to be passing the baton. I’m thrilled for her,” Plum remarked, according to Voepel. Plum said on how the trip was a “dark point” in her life since she felt pressured to overtake Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles’ record at the time. Clark, she said, “carries it with elegance.”
According to Voepel, Plum stated, “To be honest, [the record] was very much a low period in my life.” “It seemed like a lot of pressure, and that record kind of ensnared me.” I hope that the media as a whole takes the time to realize that Clark is a young woman with feelings and emotions in addition to being a basketball player. There’s a lot to handle there, but she handles it with grace.” Clark will be the center of attention throughout the Maryland game, where she will be the subject of a lone camera, as well as throughout her continuous pursuit to surpass Plum’s record. The Terrapins (12-9) and Hawkeyes (20-2) will square off on Fox at 8 p.m. ET.
