News Report: Five Important UNC Tar Heels Players Will Not Play Because of Injuries.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina — Head coach Mack Brown announced on Monday that three football players from North Carolina who are charged following a deadly vehicle accident in January will still be a member of the Tar Heels program and will take part in spring practice.

Following the completion of the legal process, the program will sanction sophomore defensive lineman Maliki Hamrick, junior defensive lineman Travis Shaw, and sophomore offensive lineman Zach Rice, according to Brown.

According to Brown, “We currently have three guys going through the judicial system for misdemeanors.” “We’ll allow the legal process to play out, and once it does, we’ll take appropriate disciplinary action inside our program.”

In an accident on January 21 at the intersection of Raleigh Road and East Barbee Chapel Road, 20-year-old UNC student Molly Elizabeth Rotunda lost her life. According to documents, Rotunda was a passenger in a 2014 Mercedes Benz E350 driven by Flemeeja Brewer, a student at UNC who is accused of committing several felonies following the fatal collision.

Police documents state that the car veered off the road, struck a concrete culvert, and then overturned in the junction while “going 124 mph in a 45 mph zone.”

Brewer and an additional passenger in the vehicle sustained injuries. The football players weren’t inside the vehicle.

We heard from WRAL News that street racing might have had a role in the collision.

Rice, 20, of Virginia, was accused of violating a legal speed limit, ingesting or possessing alcohol before the age of 21, and driving after drinking. According to a warrant, Rice was driving right behind the wrecked car.

Shaw, 19, faces charges of underage alcohol consumption and possession, five counts of aiding and abetting underage alcohol consumption and possession, and an outstanding arrest warrant for neglecting to appear in Durham County on charges of possession of marijuana, underage alcohol consumption, and unauthorized possession. According to warrants, Shaw allegedly purchased three tequila bottles from the Chapel Hill club Still Life.
