The larger American Bully has been responsible for more than 70% of all dog-related deaths in the UK since 2021.’
In light of a number of events involving the breed in recent years—the most recent of which occurred on Saturday—home secretary Suella Braverman says she is in need of “immediate guidance” about the prohibition of “lethal” American Bully XL dogs.
Investigating the incident is West Midlands Police. On Saturday, the dog bit an 11-year-old girl as they were walking in Birmingham’s Bordesley Green.
Two men who intervened were also bitten, breaking their arms and injuring their shoulders.
After being examined by a local veterinarian, the dog was placed in safe kennels while the inquiry was still underway.
Police have also communicated with the owner of the dog.
After the attack, Ms. Braverman wrote on X, expressing her dismay at the phone footage going viral on social media. The American XL Bully poses an obvious and deadly threat to our communities, especially to the younger members of society.
“This cannot continue. I’ve urgently requested guidance on outlawing them.
There are presently no legal restrictions on the American Bully XL, despite its strong resemblance to the illegal pit bull terrier breed.
With the murder of a woman in south London and the shooting of two dogs by Met police in May, dogs have been in the news recently, and not for the good reasons.
During her attack in Surrey, 28-year-old Natasha Johnston was walking eight animals, including her American Bully XL.
After a forensic veterinarian study determined that the dog was the cause of her death, it was put to death.
In the meantime, following claims of an attack, police in Poplar controversially shot and killed two Staffordshire bull terriers. Since then, a petition calling for the officers’ accountability has amassed over a million signatures.
At a park in West London, two American XL bully dogs attacked a small chihuahua in June, resulting in the dog’s death.
How about the law regarding dangerous pets, and certain breeds are off limits?
