news reports: Sherrone Moore is focused on a potential steal of a hire for a defensive coordinator….

Sherrone Moore is intent on making a stealthy hire for a defensive coordinator.

A pro defensive coordinator target that I mentioned in yesterday’s 3R story was reluctant to be linked to the Michigan position because he was worried about how it would affect his pro prospects. Since then, Michigan’s situation has improved, and sources inform me that Joe Cullen, the defensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, is a top contender for the job.

Cullen has been in constant communication with Sherrone Moore for the past week, and it is clear that they are interested in one other, according to sources in the agent and coaching circles.

Fans of the Detroit Lions may recognize the name because from 2006 to 2008, he was Rod Marinelli’s defensive line coach for the team. Cullen left Ole Miss following his detention on an intoxication charge for passing out at a Subway restaurant. Cullen then traveled to Detroit. His two alcohol-related events almost put a stop to his professional career before it ever begun, which is equally concerning given the start of his stay in Detroit.

Tabs for analysts Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Trojans and Lions is the most underappreciated rookie wide receiver.

Purchase Amon-Ra St. Brown shares right away. It’s James Jones.

The NFL Network analyst Jones, a Super Bowl champion receiver with the Green Bay Packers, selected the former standout Trojan and Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver as his choice for the most underappreciated rookie receiver in 2021.

“Well, my player of choice is Amon-Ra St. Brown, a USC standout for the Detroit Lions. He’s headed to the Detroit Lions with Jared Goff, you guys should pay attention. First of all, they’ll be playing many games at a disadvantage, according to Jones. This implies that in order to make some plays, you will need to toss the ball. This man can run routes well, make plays, and make some difficult catches. He will have numerous opportunities to demonstrate his abilities as well as numerous targets. He is going to have a great year, in my opinion.

The fourth-round selection of St. Brown came at position 112 overall.

With an established quarterback in Jared Goff, a new star left lineman in Penei Sewell, and a team devoid of elite skill players at receiver, the Lions were a perfect fit for St. Brown. After joining Jacksonville in the offseason, Marvin Jones Jr. set a team record in 2020 with 76 receptions for 980 yards and nine touchdowns. He’ll start his rookie season wearing No. 14. During Lions minicamp, St. Brown allegedly played both indoors and outdoors.

Wide receivers were so deep in the 2021 NFL Draft that St. Brown fell in the draft order. Daniel Jeremiah, an analyst for NFL.com, projected the former five-star recruit as an impact player in the NFL coming into the draft.

Jeremiah stated, “I believe (he’s) going to be a day-two receiver. (He) was an excited kid coming out of high school.” He was a star player at the elite school at Mater Dei in Orange County, and he has only gotten better since enrolling at USC. He can climb the ladder, reach the top, and make all the huge plays that are required. I appreciate how fiercely competitive he was as a blocker, and he’s difficult after the catch. If you want to see that, play the Arizona State tape.”

Due to the abbreviated COVID-19 football season, St. Brown only played in six games last season but finished with 41 catches for 478 yards, seven touchdowns, and 11.7 yards per catch. St. Brown completed his collegiate career with 178 receptions, 2,270 yards, 16 touchdowns, 12.8 yards per grab, and one rushing touchdown in 30 games over the course of three seasons with USC.
