Falcons’ Morris Gives Rams’ McVay Credit for Growth.
After serving as an assistant coach and interim head coach for six years, from 2015 to 2020, Raheem Morris is well-known to the Atlanta Falcons, so his return as the team’s permanent head coach was truly a thrilling homecoming. Morris is a significantly different coach now than he was during his last stay in Atlanta, even though it was just three years ago. He has learned a great deal from one of the most respected coaches in the league, Sean McVay, while serving as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
Morris gave a laudatory speech about McVay during his Monday press conference, calling him a “very terrific friend.”
That goes back to me talking about where I’ve come from,” Morris told reporters. “Getting a chance to go help a friend in Sean McVay go win a championship. Getting a chance to be around [Rams general manager] Les Snead and really be jealous of that relationship. “When I got there, one of the first things I told Sean just noticing how we moved through daily rhythm and routine and things that we’ve done was, ‘Man, I am jealous of you and Les Snead’s relationship.’ I said, to watch you guys collaborate and move in silence, be able to have your communication ongoing, have your communication consistent, honest, open, all of those thing you guys do with each other, that is the next step.”
Morris played a crucial role in the Rams’ three-year tenure in the City of Angels. With future Hall of Fame defensive end Aaron Donald as his only starting experience, he led the defense during the Rams’ 2021 run for the Super Bowl and later spearheaded a comeback on that side of the ball. Morris is confident that the advice McVay gave him will help him in the next phase of his career as he returns to Atlanta in the role of full-time leader.
Morris remarked, “There’s nothing more enjoyable than supporting a friend or someone you care about win a championship with an organization and applying all of the lessons you learned—like listening and communicating—back to the Atlanta community to keep winning and accomplish our goals.” “I’m very certain that we can accomplish that with the people we know are present.” Morris was an assistant to Dan Quinn in 2017, the last time the Falcons made the playoffs. Now, he will have to try to get them back.
