Young Phillies outfielder Taking Up Beloved Slugger’s Community Role
After the departure of a beloved player this offseason, a different Philadelphia Phillies player will take over a role he did within the community.
Rhys Hoskins left in free agency to join the Milwaukee Brewers, so this season will definitely feel different in the Philadelphia Phillies clubhouse.
It was obvious when Bryce Harper moved to first base that the wounded Hoskins might need to look for a new team in 2024.
It’s the regrettable aspect of athletics.
After being drafted and developing into a beloved figure, someone who has been a mainstay inside the organization finally leaves the team.
Apart from the implications for the Phillies as a team, the loss of Hoskins will also be felt throughout the Philadelphia community.
He and his spouse demonstrated their philanthropy by organizing multiple events that benefited various causes.
The slugger read aloud to nearby schoolchildren as one of his activities.
According to Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies’ young outfielder Brandon Marsh will assume that job in his absence.
Marsh did a really great thing with this.
After having his greatest season to date in 2023, the 26-year-old slashed.putting up a 277/.372/.458 line with 12 home runs, 60 RBI, a 127 OPS+, and a 3.4 WAR.
The outfielder, who continues to prove himself on the field, could have easily focused on improving his skills.
Instead, despite his lack of confidence as a reader, he’s making a significant contribution to the community.
It’s wonderful to see someone like Marsh take up some of the philanthropic work that the slugger undertook since Hoskins will be missed both as a member of the club and as a part of Philadelphia.
