Nick Montgomery: Hibernian supporters discuss the manager after the team missed the playoffs.
After yet another poor season, Hibernian’s management have committed to a “complete assessment of the football structure” at Easter Road.
Bill Foley, owner of Bournemouth, who just bought a 25% share in the Edinburgh club, has recruited the aid of his Black Knight company.
Is the turkey casting its ballot for Christmas in this way? After a second bottom-six result in three seasons, will heads roll?
Since the Gordon family took ownership in the summer of 2019, Lee Johnson, Jack Ross, and Shaun Maloney have all lost their jobs, and new head coach Nick Montgomery is facing criticism from the crowd.
Montgomery’s record is not great—he has only eight victories from 29 league games and a horrible tendency of giving up goals late in the game. But is a change in management the solution?
We solicited opinions from supporters regarding the manager and received a varied response.
Time for patience or time to go?
Alan: We simply have to give the manager time. It’s been a revolving door for a while now so we need to give him a good crack at it, time for some patience.
Kenny: His tactics all season have been clueless. He keeps playing out from the back, losing goals left, right and centre. When he got the job he promised attacking football – still waiting. We always had a high percentage of possession, but that was in our own half. Sorry, he has to go.
Stephen: As much as I don’t want to see another manager sacked, it has to be said that results haven’t been anywhere near good enough for Hibs and things must improve going forward. I’m happy to give Monty the summer window and see where we go from there.
Craig: At the time of his appointment, Nick Montgomery was a huge gamble that we really didn’t need. That hasn’t worked out, and I say that with kindness! Football that is slow, boring, and eye-bleeding. If we were seeing results, I wouldn’t mind as much, but that’s also not the case. He must leave, as quickly as possible.
Gordon: We completely underperformed this season; for a team of our caliber, we should be in third or fourth place. If the players stay the same, then a new manager won’t make any changes.
Colin: After seven months in office, he had the January transfer window, which isn’t the best time to acquire the players you desire. Without a doubt, I would grant him another transfer window. We will look bad as a club if we fire him right now. It is not a good image to become the ‘Watford of Scotland,’ we need stability and continuity.
Fergis: Not quite sold—weird squad choices and subpar strategy. He leaked goals, but he didn’t tighten defense either. To persuade the board that he is the right person to lead us next season, I believe he needs a solid season finale. It will take a lot to win over people again because this season has been an absolute disaster.
Darren: The last two crucial games have demonstrated that he is not capable of winning, even though I was fervently hoping for him to triumph. Black Knight, I believe, will want their own man—whoever that man may be—to assist in advancing their cause.
Mark: Monty never should have gotten the position in the first place. Johnson and Maloney shouldn’t either. It has backfired on the Hibs decision makers, who disregarded deserving Scottish candidates because they believed they knew better. The concern is, who will they next inflict harm on us if Monty leaves? And who will select our signings, since that has also been a chaotic process?
Angus: As an 80-year-old longtime supporter, I have experienced many highs and lows with the Hibees. Like everything else in this football game, I don’t have an easy solution for the club, other than to suggest that everything will work out for the better. Let Monty have time and room to carry out his intentions.
