Holger Rune was “naive and starstruck” by Roger Federer’s coach, as the abrupt split explained.
Holger Rune recently parted ways with both of his coaches, Severin Luthi, the former coach of Roger Federer.
The mother of Holger Rune has talked about the shocking split between Severin Luthi and the world no. 7. Before splitting up, the two had been coworkers for less than two months. Working with Roger Federer’s coach, Aneke Rune said, left them star struck and gullible enough to get a new guru.
Recent events have seen a near total collapse of Rune’s coaching camp, as his two mentors, Boris Becker and Luthi, left because they were unable to provide the 20-year-old with the necessary time. Aneke revealed the news at the end of January, with Luthi being the first to depart.
The Swiss tennis coach previously worked with Federer for 15 years and Rune was the first player he had linked up with since the 20-time Major winner retired in 2022. Luthi joined Rune at the recent Australian Open where the world No. 7 branded Federer his childhood idol and said it was “great to have something from him in my box”.
However, Aneke has since acknowledged that they were foolish to introduce a new voice in the middle of a Grand Slam, which may have led to issues. Rune’s mother and former manager said on The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast, “Maybe also we were a little naive, also a little you know starstruck like, Oh Roger, 20 Grand Slams, it’s not a problem to bring in a new coach.”
