REPORT: Zach Ertz will not be elevated from the practice squad for the Detroit Lions’ NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers for the reasons listed in the report…

Detroit Lions will NOT play TE Zach Ertz vs. 49ers.

ESPN reports that Zach Ertz, the recently acquired tight end, will not be among the players the Detroit Lions choose off the practice squad later on Saturday in preparation for their game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Ertz signed on Wednesday and spent the entire week catching up, according to Jeremy Fowler, but he won’t be activated until Sunday.

2024 NFL playoffs: Lions won't activate veteran Zach Ertz for NFC championship game vs. 49ers, per report - CBSSports.com

Due to the postseason placement of James Mitchell and Brock Wright on injured reserve, the Lions will be rather shorthanded at tight end. At tight end, the Lions will only have access to veteran Anthony Firkser and rookie Sam LaPorta.

The team will need to determine whether Ertz can catch up in time for Sunday’s game and whether his skill set was suitable for this week’s specific game plan against the 49ers, as coach Dan Campbell stated earlier in the week. Therefore, the news is not entirely surprising.

Campbell stated on Wednesday, “He realizes we’re just going to gauge this and see where we’re at.” He will so be present here (during practice). However, notice that he has played. performed at a high caliber. He only needs to decide if this is the right week to use him because there are things he does well.

The Lions are expected to announce their practice squad call-ups around 4 p.m. ET. With the Lions down an offensive lineman this week (Jonah Jackson), expect at least one of the players elevated to be a lineman.
