Sunderland Round-up: First Summer Signing Arrives, Head Coach Search Set to End Head Coach Search Comes to an End
According to Fabrizio Romano, FC Lorient’s head coach, Régis Le Bris, has decided to join Sunderland. A work permit has been obtained, which is more difficult in this post-Brexit period, and remuneration has been agreed upon. Sunderland’s official statement is coming soon.
Who is Regis Le Bris? Regis Le Bris, a 48-year-old former player, is still new to coaching. Before joining Sunderland, the Frenchman had only managed one team, FC Lorient. He took over Le Merlus in 2022, overseeing 76 games. His inexperience and statistics may concern some fans. Le Bris has only won 23 games in his managerial career, and Lorient was demoted to Ligue 2 last season. He did, however, lead the squad to tenth place in Ligue 1 during his debut season.
Following his 10th-place finish with Lorient, a club with a little budget compared to others in the division, Le Bris was connected with a move to Leeds United before they hired Daniel Farke. Regis Le Bris appears to fit Sunderland’s strategy of working with and developing young talent while playing exciting football. Will this be enough to qualify the Black Cats for promotion or playoffs? Time will tell.
Goalkeeper Signs
Sunderland have revealed their first signing of the summer. Goalkeeper Simon Moore will officially join the Black Cats on July 1st, following a three-year stint at Coventry City. The 34-year-old has committed to a two-year contract. Moore said of his move to Wearside, “It feels fantastic to be here; when I heard Sunderland were interested, I jumped at the opportunity.” I’ve been in some really successful dressing rooms over the years, and I’d like to believe I can bring that to Sunderland. I’m excited to go in, meet the rest of the guys, and help steer the Club in the correct path.”
