UNC Men’s Basketball: Creating History.

As we near the midway point of ACC play, North Carolina (17-3, 9-0 ACC) is comfortably sitting at No. 3 in the nation and the one-seed line, so the wounds are starting to mend in Chapel Hill. After nearly four seasons of wondering if North Carolina’s name will be called on selection Sunday or not, many have taken solace in the Tar Heels’ most recent victory.

It’s simple to claim that Hubert Davis has successfully restored the program to playing “Carolina Basketball,” but this team’s accomplishments go well above his expectations. It’s a historically strong Tar Heel team that we are watching, and their performances are rewriting history.

Following their triumph over Florida State on Saturday, North Carolina has now won 10 straight conference games and is still unbeaten overall. The Tar Heels are off to their best conference play start since 2000–2001. Additionally, it was UNC’s 750th ACC victory overall, making North Carolina the first university to accomplish that feat.

The first player in the history of North Carolina basketball to reach 1,000 defensive rebounds was Armando Bacot. An accomplishment like this demonstrates the impact the veteran big man has had on both this squad and previous ones. He is an all-time Tar Heel great. Bacot is averaging just over 10 rebounds per game this season, despite his meager four against the Seminoles yesterday.

RJ Davis has also risen to fifth place in North Carolina history’s all-time list of three-pointers made. On Monday, he broke the mark for the most games in a row in which a player has made multiple three-pointers in UNC history. The last time a Tar Heel team had a double-digit win streak until this year was during the 2016–17 season, when Justin Jackson last held that milestone.

One contender for National Coach of the Year is Hubert Davis. A strong contender for both the ACC Player of the Year award and the National Player of the Year award is RJ Davis. A candidate for ACC Freshman of the Year is Elliot Cadeau. For the third time in the previous twelve years, North Carolina has won 17 or more of its first 20 games. The other two years were National Champion in 2016–17 and National Runner-up in 2015–16.

UNC basketball has the most extensive history of any program in the nation. Nevertheless, the 2023–24 team is already exhibiting some of the greatest performances we have ever seen. People, buckle up—Hubert Davis and North Carolina aren’t just riding high this year. They’re determined to finish the job of rewriting history, and they’ve already started.
