A severe blow: The departure of two key players from Georgia Bulldogs could be the team’s demise.

Kirby Smart’s staff reveals two departures, and Georgia names a new coordinator for special teams.

ATHENS, Georgia (AP) — Head coach Kirby Smart revealed further staff changes on Wednesday, and one of those changes is the new special teams coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The move to replace Scott Cochran is a promotion for Kirk Benedict, who spent the previous two seasons as a special teams analyst.

Both Cochran and offensive analyst Darrell Dickey left to take advantage of other possibilities, according to Smart.

In 2020, Cochran—a former strength coach at Alabama—moved to Georgia to take a job as an on-field coach. After taking a leave of absence before of the 2021 season to address mental health concerns, he returned to Smart’s staff following the first seven games of that season.

After serving as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator for five years, 64-year-old Dickey spent one season at Georgia. He was North Texas’s head coach for a while.

In a statement, Smart said, “I want to thank Scott and Darrell for their services to Georgia football.” “We’re hoping for the best for them going forward.”

The Bulldogs just underwent a round of coaching changes. In order to spend more time with his family, co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp went down to an analyst position, while defensive backs coach Fran Brown left to take on the position as head coach at Syracuse.
