In 2024, how can the Cincinnati Bengals strengthen their position at critical right tackle?.
The Cincinnati Bengals have worked hard over the last several seasons to strengthen the offensive line following the inconsistent performance of their star quarterback Joe Burrow’s ACL tear midway through the 2019 campaign. At the centre of the offensive line, interior linemen Alex Cappa and Ted Karras have shown promise, and Orlando Brown Jr., the left tackle, seems to have learned how to play at least a passable level in the previous year.
From a negative standpoint, one of the main problems with the line last season was left guard Cordell Volson, who has had difficulty adjusting to life in the NFL. I have already discussed the options available to Cincinnati should they choose to pursue a replacement at the guard position. The right tackle position will, regrettably, be Cincinnati’s biggest issue.
The Cincinnati Bengals went out and signed talented La’el Collins to take the right tackle post after the 2020 Super Bowl season. Following his ACL tear in December 2022, Cincinnati determined they needed to reassess their tackle position and that the best course of action would be to select a first-round player from their fiercest rival, the Kansas City Chiefs. Orlando Brown Jr., a left tackle, was selected by the club despite the fact that the issue was on the right side.
Jonah Williams, the current left tackle, was incensed when that contract was revealed and called for a trade the next day. Williams wanted to stay an NFL left tackle because of the large salary difference between the two positions, which makes sense. Following a week or so, Williams was persuaded to use the right tackle position for the balance of his contract.
Williams was a reliable option this season, but given that story, I don’t think there’s much chance he’ll sign with the team to play a position he doesn’t want to play. In order to play at right tackle this offseason, the team will need to locate a whole new alternative.
