On February 18, at the Bears’ new campus arena in Waco, Texas, Baylor women’s basketball players will commemorate program legend Brittney Griner with a jersey retirement ceremony.

The game that day between Baylor and Texas Tech at the recently constructed Foster Pavilion will mark the retirement of Griner’s No. 42.

In a press statement on Monday, Griner stated, “I’m pleased to return home to Baylor and celebrate where so much of my journey started.”

I’m appreciative to Coach Nicki (Collen) and the whole Baylor family, and I’m excited for the chance to return to campus, spend time with the team, and enjoy this amazing moment with my family by my side. Hold ’em, Bears.

Griner did not play for Collen, who took over the program in 2022. Griner was a star player for the Baylor squad that went 40-0 in 2011–12 and won the national championship.

It felt appropriate to recognize Brittney and welcome her home given the opening of Foster Pavilion and how the WNBA offseason fell into our schedule.

During her illustrious career with the Bears, Griner won two AP Player of the Year awards, the Wooden Award, and the Naismith Award. She also helped the Phoenix Mercury win a title in 2014. Griner has since moved on to a successful WNBA career.

A narcotics charge led to Griner’s imprisonment in Russia in February 2022, where he remained until December of that same year. According to the US State Department, she was “wrongfully” detained.
