There will be an All-Star 3-point shootout between Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.
The league announced on Tuesday that on February 17 during All-standout weekend in Indianapolis, Steph Curry, the all-time NBA 3-point leader, will compete against WNBA standout and Walnut Creek native Sabrina Ionescu in a 3-point shooting competition.
This will be the first time a 3-point challenge between an NBA and WNBA player takes place.
Curry has won the 3-point challenge twice at All-Star weekend (in 2015 and 2021). Ionescu of the New York Liberty broke Curry’s record with a record-breaking 37 points (25 of 27 shooting) in the 2023 WNBA All-Star 3-point contest. Once Ionescu broke the record, he issued Curry a challenge to a head-to-head match. While speaking with rookie Brandin Podziemski over the microphone prior to the Warriors’ game against the Sacramento Kings last week, Curry made hints about the possibility of this matchup.
On social media, Ionescu accepted the challenge. Ionescu stated on social media that she would prefer to step back and shoot from the NBA 3-point line during the game, despite the fact that the rules state she must shoot from the WNBA 3-point line, which is one foot and nine inches closer to the basket than the NBA 3-point line.
Ionescu, a guard and two-time WNBA All-Star, broke the single-season 3-point record in 2023 while playing for the New York Liberty. The Walnut Creek native, 26, graduated from Miramonte High School as the number one guard in 2016.
For the first time since 2013, Curry did not make the starting lineups for the All-Star game last week. The 35-year-old still has a chance to be a reserve on the Western Conference team when the full teams are revealed on TNT on Thursday. He has started all nine of his prior All-Star games.
